Institute for Liquid Atomization and Spray Systems-Japan (ILASS-Japan)
|
| Liquid atomization is a technical
and academic field affiliated with a wide range of interdisciplinary
fields such as machinery, chemistry, aerospace, pharmacy, medicine,
atomic energy, agricultural spraying, and granulation of solid
particles. It serves as an important role in engineering and industrial
application. Particularly, in recent years, the further advancement
of liquid atomization has become a more important role in the
fields of energies and environmental health. |
| However, in spite of the technology
of atomization being applied in a wide range of industrial fields,
in most of the cases it has been regarded as a secondary subject
with the exception of some enterprises. The current status is
that procurement of technological information has been barely
achieved. Due to the difference in characteristics of atomization
in each applied field, currently, trial-and-error methods are
being practiced to solve issues of concern. |
| This Institute was founded
in August 1991 as a new organization for the purpose of progress
of research in liquid atomization and spray systems and for contribution
to development of its industry, universities and government offices.
Thus, the purpose of this Institute is to promote the scientific
technology of liquid atomization and spray systems. Ever since,
various programs have been actively held such as exchange of information
in the journal published by this Institute, symposium and short
course on atomization technology. |
| This Institute will serve
as a stimulus for researchers and engineers in various fields
to acknowledge each other based on the common theme gatomizationh
and cultivate resources that can contribute to industries and
other applicable fields. This Institute is committed to contribute
to atomization research industrial development and to continue
the activities going forward into the 21st century. |
| This Institute would appreciate
your understanding of our commitment and your joining. Furthermore,
this Institute would be looking forward to your role in leadership
and support for the activities of the Institute. |
Purpose of ILASS-Japan
|
| The purpose of this Institute
is contribution to the related fields, interacting among members
and various foreign countries, and return of benefits back to
humankind as well as promotion of scientific technology of liquid
atomization. |
History of ILASS-Japan
|
| As the fast industrial progress
took place in Japan in the latter part of the 1960fs, high-performance
products, saving of energy and conservation of environment awakened
the importance of liquid atomization. This triggered gSymposium
on Liquid Atomizationh in 1972 ahead of the worldwide activities,
sponsored by the Fuel Society of Japan (currently, Japan Energy
Institute) and by more than ten related academic institutes. Researchers
and engineers from various fields gathered for the first time
in this symposium, which offered a place to discuss liquid atomization
problems, and it has continued approximately 20 years ever since. |
| This activity in Japan spread out to the world,
and the first international conference was held in Japan in 1978
and has been held every 3 years in member countries in the world.
In the meantime the international network had been developed,
and the Liquid Atomization and Spray Systems-International (ILASS-International)
chaired by Dr. Toshio Kurabayashi (Honorable Member of this Institute)
was established in 1988. And it was decided to have a national
institute ILASS-National in each country. Subsequently, in 1989
ILASS-Japan (Institute for Liquid Atomization and
Spray Systems-Japan) was founded. The activities continued under
the support of the Japan Energy Institute, and, in August 1991,
the Institute became an independent organization as the Institute
for Liquid Atomization and Spray Systems-Japan with the request
and determination to contribute to humankind on a wide scale.
Thus, this Institute took a fresh start. |

Activities by ILASS-Japan
|
| Liquid Atomization and Spray
Systems-Japan is trying to proceed with all the activities for
research progress and industrial development on liquid atomization
cooperating with or without other institutes. The following routine
activities are in progress: |
| 1. Symposium |
| Liquid
Atomization Symposium has been held every year, and researchers
andengineers from a wide range of fields
are reporting a great deal of research results. Also, active discussion
and exchange of information on the research are taking place.
|
| 2. Short course
and Seminar |
| gLiquid Atomization Forumh
designed for young to medium level engineers is held once a year.
It is focused on learning techniques by lecture and practice training
in principal measuring methods for spray characteristics. Besides,
lecture meeting are planned when appropriate, on such topics as
gAtomization Basich, g New Application Techniqueh and etc. |
| 3. Publication of Journal and
Newsletter |
| gAtomizationh, a journal
published by this Institute, is being issued quarterly, which
contains articles and research papers regarding atomization. Also,
it is planned to issue a newsletter for the purpose of exchanging
information among the members and providing the latest technical
data. |
| 4.Research Committee |
| This
Institute is planning a committee to research and examine the
latest problems and common cases jointly by researchers and engineers.
Those who are interested may join the committee. |
| 5.International Cooperation |
| (1) The International Conference on Liquid Atomization
and Spray Systems (ICLASS) was first held in Tokyo
in 1978, and then in Madison in 1982, London in 1985, Sendai in
1988, Washington in 1991, Seoul in 1997 and Pasadena in 2000.
This Institute sponsors the conference in Japan and supports in
other member countries as a CO-sponsor. |
| (ICLASS: International Conference
on Liquid Atomization and Spray Systems) |
| (2) Cooperation for International
Publication |
| gAtomization and Spraysh is
published 6 times a year in the USA by Hemisphere Company, which
contains papers regarding atomization. A member may submit an
article and subscribe at a reduced cost. |
| (3) Cooperation for International
Paper Award |
| An award for a paper, the Tanasawa
Award, was established in 1987, and is to be given for the most
excellent paper published in the proceedings of ICLASS. |
